What a fabulous find! As lovers of soba noodles, we heard this place has the best handmade noodles and in addition, we heard it was good luck to eat them for the New Year. Well, who doesn't need a little bit of good luck? The ambiance in this charming family run restaurant is warm and welcoming. A super kind man at the counter will patiently answer all of your questions and immediately hand your order over to the kitchen. You're then given a number and offered help yourself to barley tea or water. My hubby and I both ordered hot fish broth with tempura and of course, soba noodles. I could have eaten those soba noodles all day long...they were the absolute best I have ever tasted. The tempura was light with fresh, delicious veggies and shrimp. We arrived on the early side of lunch hour and by the time we left, the place was full. Ample free street parking in a nice area of old town Torrance.
I just love eating here. The specials are always creative and delicious. I had the gravy curry udon (hot) and my husband had the yuzu chashu soba (hot). I like to try the new soups but if aren't any, the regulars are just as good. Service is always efficient. You should return your dishes after you're done. It helps the staff.
We ordered crispy pork cutlet bowl (thick .75" pork cutlet, breaded with egg, atop rice), a hefty bowl (4.5/5). We also got a soba with dark dipping broth (I think zaru soba with assorted tempura), which was enjoyed by young and old in our foursome. Perfect tempura and soba (5/5). Also mentai (spicy cod roe atop rice) (4.5/5). I devoured my Niku udon bowl (wider wheat noodles, almost like linguine), with sweet marinated beef slivers, perfectly poached egg and red ginger and green onions; packed with flavors on many levels, and my favorite of all I tried (5/5). Inside there is an ordering side of the restaurant, you get a number of that you bring to your table and they bring you your food on the other side. Tables first come first served. Clean and spare inside but worn in a well-used and home-style way, I wouldn't say immaculately clean but not dirty. The food felt and tasted authentic and we will definitely be back. Nice little gem in old town Torrance.
Service was friendly and quick. Came first thing in the morning on a sugar Sunday. No wait. There was self serve hot tea and iced water/barley tea. The place was quaint, clean and quiet. Got the hot yuzu chasu udon and Mentaiko cream udon to go. The udon noodles are thin and don't have much Q. The broth is good for both. The Yuzu is saltier than Afuri ramen and has slightly less yuzu flavor but is a good substitute if you don't want to drive to DTLA. I didn't really like the sweetness of the chasu with the yuzu flavor. The mentaiko cream was good and not too milky in flavor. Probably needed more mentaiko for the amount of soup. It's a lot of food overall. Would come back again.
A small fmaily owned business and a hole in the wall place. Our family really enjoys coming to this place for solid Japanese soba noodles and rice bowls. There's a simplicity to their dishes that we really enjoy. Their noodles are handmade daily and our kids devour them! The quality of their noodles are so good!! - yuzu chasu soba noodles (cold) - kakiage rice bowl - mentai cream udon - beef bowl - plain udon Their service is pretty slow but totally worth the wait. You order first and grab your own table. The water is self serve. Street parking available everywhere - not too hard to find
Dude, this place is so good, I wish i can eat here everyday. Unfortunately, it's pretty pricey but the quality is absolutely there. You order first and then grab yourself a seat. They offer self serve hot/cold tea and water. The udon and soba noodles here are just top notch. Whether you get it in a cold broth or hot soup, you won't be disappointed. Cheers!!
I am now obsessed with this place! I got the yuzu chashu cold udon which was super refreshing and delicious. It wasn't busy when I went for lunch but it was also a weekday. You first go in and order at the counter. The server was helpful on giving me recommendations. Then you find your seat with the number they give you. You can find plenty of seating and the restaurant is kept very clean. I am definitely coming here again!
Soba-making is an art that isn't that common to see, given how difficult and time intensive it is. There are only a small subset of Japanese restaurants that serve hand made soba, and an even smaller number that make soba using 100% buckwheat, rather than adulterating it with other flours that make the dough more ductile and pliable. Ichimiann is one of those place that still make it the old fashioned way, with 100% buckwheat. That's ultimately the reason why we chose to eat here and we were not disappointed. We arrived exactly at 11AM, when they opened and were the first in the building. The menu isn't too complicated but if you have any questions. the cashier is very helpful. Ichimiann is a counter service establishment, so you order in at the front, select your seats and get utensils, then they bus the table for you at the end. We went with two dishes: Chicken Curry, Soba, Hot ($14) - This is homemade soba, and you can definitely tell through the darker pieces embedded throughout. The soba is served in a dashi based broth, then topped with a couple of ladles full of chicken curry. The soba is tender, yet has a bit of a bite to it. The broth starts off with a kombu umami forwardness, then transitions to a rich curry flavor when the two components mix together as you eat. The chicken is super tender - you can tell that it's been stewed for a long time. Everything in this dish is superb. (5/5) Kakiage, Soba, Cold ($17) - I've been hesitant to get cold soba in the past (I know it's totally different, but I dislike Korean cold noodles), but decided to give it a try here. When I took my first bite - woah, cold soba is totally different from hot. The texture is way different, more firm, but very pleasant. Almost like al dente. The broth is dashi, but cooled down is very light and refreshing. The kakiage consists of a ball of tempura battered onion, carrots, and shrimp, fried until lightly crisp and stuck together. There's wakame and scallions included to add additional umami and freshness to the dish. Again, everything is superbly executed and exceptionally delicious. I now can't fathom why I was so afraid of getting cold soba in the past. (5/5) I definitely recommend Ichimiann for some superb soba. Just make sure to get here early - by the time we left around noon, the building was bustling and there was a line of people waiting to order. Bathrooms - None that i could see.
Food: I stupidly thought all sobas come cold, and I don't really like cold noodles. My friend at the time (now turned bf hehe) suggested we go here for soba, which I was initially not enthused about. But I still went, thinking at least I'll enjoy his company. Boy was I wrong, I mean I enjoyed his company, but the unagi hot soba I ordered was mindblowingly good too! The thick pieces of unagi with the warm soup and soba noodles were like heaven in my mouth. I had to come back, and dragged my mom here not too long afterwards. I tried the mentai oroshi (I'm always a fan of anything cod roe), and that totally solidified this place as definite 5 stars for me! Price: each soba ranges from $12-20 depending on the toppings, I'd say this is very reasonable. The only thing I was hesitant about was that it's CASH ONLY place! For those of you who don't carry cash around (like me), be aware and be prepared Ambiance: nice small ish place located in old town torrance, has about 8 tables in total. Casual and family friendly but also great to come with friends for hangout and light lunch. It wasn't too busy each time I came here on weekends around noon, didn't have to wait much, if at all Service: very nice and polite when taking orders on the front desk, no issues. Water is self serve Parking: free street parking available throughout old town torrance, but you may need to walk just a little from where you parked to the restaurant
